A Life Less Ordinary
He was a first-time kidnapper, pushed to the edge...
She was an experienced victim, impatient of her life ...
They were the host of heaven, seeking to prove that love could still conquer all ... | Trust me, it would be worth paying eleven bucks to see Cameron Diaz act in a Corn Flakes commercial. |
This is a nineties interpretation of an old fifties film genre. It's the old guardian-angels-put-the-couple-in-jeopardy trick. As this unlikely couple meet, argue, and allegedly fall in love, we are introduced to a world where reality is just an illusion. Cameron Diaz steals the film while her character is trying to steal daddy's millions. The trouble is, this film nearly makes it, but doesn't. It could be a great cult classic, but, not. One of the flaws of the film is the unlikely pairing, at the end of the film, do we really believe that this brave, bold woman and awkward man really have anything in common? The laws of synchronicity or maybe just Hollywood have this film and Excess Baggage coming out at about the same time. Essentially two films of fake kidnappings. This is getting to be a common movie trick, a cliche, and something really special needs to be done with it to lift the story out of hackery. Bizarre.
