Festivale online magazine, April, 1998 Leave it to Beaver movie review |
Leave it to Beaver
Hollywood is a hungry machine, and popular culture like old television series are often beamed up on the big screen.
In this production even the actors are TV favourites, Ma Cleaver is Maggie from Northern Exposure and Pa Cleaver is the
deadbeat husband from Veronica's Closet. |
The latest Beaver |
This Leave it to Beaver plays it straight, not trying to radically update middle America, nor trying
to put the Cleavers in a time bubble like, say, The Brady Bunch. The result is an innocuous piece of family semi-drama. Little Beaver is trying to con his dad into buying him a bike by using Dad's obsession with football. The result is a teeny little boy in a field of bigger kids on the path to a father-son bonding lesson.
Obviously aimed at the kids, it won't bore the accompanying adults, and may even bring back fond memories for those who remember the original series (or the second series, or the telemovie...).
