Coyote UglyViolet Sanford is the single daughter of a single dad (John Goodman). She heads to a seedy New York apartment to claim fame and fortune as a songwriter. She pounds the streets and knocks at doors and discovers as so many have before her that it is a hard slog and to make it requires hard work and good luck. She finds a boy (Adam Garcia) to help her find her confidence, but more than that she discovers a bar run by a group of hot, extroverted women.

In that bar, Violet discovers that she can sing the songs of other people in public and, at least in that forgiving audience, be accepted. But she still must find a way to sing her own songs well enough to appear in the open auditions that give songwriters a chance to be heard. Shades of The Thing Called Love. For storytellers such as film-makers tales of creative people trying to find a way to make their art. These are a particular type of coming-of-age story that is descended from "Let's put on a show in the barn" movies. The search for place and meaning are universal, however some of these stories are less powerful than others. Coyote Ugly is slick and glossy and makes a lot of noise with these almost-out-of-control bartenders and the story flounders as it tries to tell the story of the romance, the career and the buddies-in-the-bar while making a great deal of noise. Watchable, but Violet's story won't change your life. |
