Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans (2009) movie review

Dark Beginnings

In a long-ago medieval world, a race of werewolves (Lycans), created from an infection, are the slaves and daylight guards of vampires.

The vampires rule the local nobles and the lives of their council is deeply political.

Told in the specific monochromatic palette devised by Wiseman in the original film this is a moody story of armoured battles, battling horror creatures, rebellion and ill-fated lovers.

The colour palette removes the bloodiness of gore, it enables the audience to watch the story unfold as supernatural and fantasic rather than horror.

Action-heavy and reminiscent of a thousand knight-tales before it, only the vampire and werewolf element gives this flick any freshness. This is the third of the franchise, so even that device is passe. Bleak.
