Me and Orson Welles (2008) movie review
Larger Than Real Life
High school student Richard (Zac Efron) lucks into a job in the 1930s company of Orson Welles (Julius) Caesar. In one week he gets the education of a lifetime.
Movie makers Orson Welles was a man as large in ego as he was in talent. He has been the subject of biographical films before. In this film he is shown in all his flawed glory -- genius, ego-maniac, selfish, womaniser and false friend.
Richard, the teenager on the cusp of manhood, and on the cusp of an artistic career, is part chorus and part hero in this tale of the week leading up to the opening night of the stage play Caesar.
The characters unfold naturally and their interactions lead us naturally to an understanding of both Richard and Welles.
The film is well-paced, interesting and holds the audience's attention.
Altogether a pleasure to watch.
