Space Warriors (2013) movie review
Space Camp: The Next Generation
In a time when kids want to grow up to be reality tv stars, and reading, writing, arithmetic (and science) seem so yesterday, Jimmy Hawkins (Thomas Horn) is aimed at the stars. He wants to be an spaceman like his dad (Dermot Mulroney), but his mother is frightened by the two space shuttle accidents and forbids her son from attending space camp and competing for a trip to the International Space Station.
The kids in this visit to space camp are more culturally diverse, and younger, than those who went into space in Space Camp. This somewhat geeky group are pitted against, among others, a buffed-up team in matching camo shorts.
The youthful competitions, part summer camp, part space simulations, take place against a subplot of trouble on the space station. As the kids struggle to achieve their goal, debris has caused problems that will ultimately require abandoning ship.
Can the kids win their chance to go into space? Will the space station be there for them? Will all the people on the space station be rescued?
This is a kids film that encourages intellectual as well as physical effort. Hopefully it will remind kids that there is a space station up there, and maybe it can help them to create a new space program in their future.
