Sleeping With Other People (2015) movie review
Playing With Fire
Two college students lose their virginity together. Twelve years later they are a good-natured womanizer and a serial cheater and when they meet again they form a platonic relationship that helps reform them..
There's a whole sub-genre about how today's twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings handle their sexual relationships. These are the descendants of the 'me' generation, who were born and raised in an age where women can be sexual beings, there is 99% reliable contraception, and somehow our communities have learnt to live with HIV.
Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) have freedom, but they are toxic, to themselves and others. What they are missing is the essential ability to form and participate in healthy loving relationships.
This is all dressed up in the romantic comedy format.
Sleeping With Other People is When Harry Met Sally for a new age. Our protagonists' behaviours are not new, but asking for symptathy for them is. Somehow we are asked to give these people a pass on their behaviour and embrace them.
Watchable, but a minor blip in the history of cinematic storytelling.
