Point Break (2015) movie review
Extreme Crimes
An extreme athlete joins the FBI and identifies a group of criminals who are trying to complete a set of eight extreme tests while committing crimes.
Point Break is reminiscent of an Alby Mangels film. It's high adventure in beautiful places. "Man against the elements". And by "man" I am specifying gender, because the Point Break films (1991 and 2015) are about expressing manhood with adrenalin and testosterone-fueled exploits.
The eight extreme tests, whose designer died without completing them are wrapped in a combination of mysticism and ego-warriorhood.
In a series of exploits the crew jump from planes, rush down snow-clad mountains, free-climb, ride motorcycles and more.
At the same time there is a bit of sex, a bit of exposition, and some male bonding over alcohol.
This idea that being a man is about risk and muscles is a limited one, and trying to validate it with a bit of eco-terrorism and a touch of invented mysticism seems a bit contrived. But maybe it's a boy thing.
