Sheila and Gary are on one of their first dates. A time machine in a nail salon enables someone to travel back in time 24 hours. What would you do, what would you change? And should you?

When Sheila met Gary in a bar she told him a funny story about being a time traveller from the future. He played along, and they went on to have the best date of their lives.

But is it?

Let's try again tomorrow.

I'll see you tomorrow.

MEET CUTE is a time travel story, and a rom-com (romantic comedy), and an existential question. We've all had moments in our lives that are too good to leave behind, or, that we wish we could have done differently. MEET CUTE, like all science fiction/fantasy time travel stories, helps us this about whether the path we didn't travel really existed, or whether we will inevitably be the people we are.

You are perfect, and you are not a mistake.

Kaley Cuoco and Peter Davidson in MEET CUTE (2022), Festivale film review

According to the writers of STAR TREK GENERATIONS time travel stories are an audience favourite. The reason why, however, is not just the idea of what if (the central question in science fiction), the fascination is in asking, what would we be.

Your time machine sucks. It's just so confusing.

MEET CUTE is a sweet, thoughtful, well-made movie that is paced just right. The film-makers give us the time to get to know the characters without giving us time for our minds to wander.

Best of all, it bears a second look, and if we return, will it be the same, or will we find new details?
