Australia's capital city Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory, which is surrounded by the state of New South Wales.

Australia was federated in 1901 (the beginning of the 20th century), and the first parliamentary meetings were held in Melbourne, Victoria. In 1908 an area of New South Wales was chosen to be the federal capital. The city was planned by Chicago designer Walter Burley Griffin. The provisional parliament house was opened in an empty paddock in 1927.

The ACT is located on the traditional lands of the indigenous Ngunnawal people. The name Canberra is thought to mean ‘meeting place’, derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra.
