Festivale online magazine, March, 1998 Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil movie review |
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
A young writer (John Cusack) is sent to Savannah to cover a prestigious Christmas party. He ends up covering the murder trial of it's host (Kevin Spacey),
and in the process discovering the eccentricities of the locals.
This film is peopled with an extraordinary group of characters, hopefully drawn from real-life characters in America's south. One character, in fact, was judged so extraordinary that it is played by the real-life person.

In order to make the film a great deal of changes had to be made, especially telescoping the time span into something more manageable and 'dramatic'. Sigh, it is another 'BOTS
' story, but in this case it offers the audience a look at a foreign culture, one where phantom dogs are walked daily and live dogs are revered as demi-gods, a cult of wealth and personality.
