Festivale online magazine, June 1998 issue Phantoms movie review |
What am I doing watching a horror film? The sacrifices I make to keep you informed, gentle reader. I tend to think that if all you want from a film is a burst of adrenalin that you could save yourself a lot of dollars by crossing a busy street at peak hour. Horror films, to be worth the money, time and energy should really offer something more. So does Phantoms offer more that a monster chase? Hmm. Not really. While we watch Ben Affleck, Peter O'Toole and a couple of pretty girl-actors running around chasing, hiding and being chased by something unseen, the suspense was around one minor point. Would they, or would they not have one of those endings where just a little bit of the monster remains? As an actor, Affleck does a nice job, but he did not look or act like a man who had done almost a decade of service in the FBI or whatever, plus college and worked his way up to sheriff. A more experienced, wiser, sheriff would have added to the film. Instead we have a lot of young (pretty) people running around and a gaunt old professor thinking. There is nothing new in this film, no profound thought, no enlightenment about the nature of being human, or life, just ... the usual. |
