Festivale online magazine, June issue Six Days, Seven Nights movie review |
Six Days, Seven Nights
If the director is Ivan Reitman, there is a very good chance that the film is going to be a comedy rich with humour in the dialogue, physical performances, and probably a few sight gags.
Six Days, Seven Nights benefits from an experienced director and actors who aren't afraid of a few knocks.
Anne Heche survived a broken toe and scorpion stings while filming, and her gutsiness is evident in her strong performance. Harrison Ford got to choose and pilot the plane, and the crew had the challenge of trudging through beautiful, almost inaccessible landscape. |
This film is the classic plane crash in the wilderness scenario, with a gutsy heroine and a wizened, cynical guide/pilot. While it was an enjoyable trip through gorgeous landscape, in the end the premise failed. Because you know, and I know, that we are supposed to suspect that in the end this pair will get together. And yet there is no reason why we should think so. The age difference of the characters isn't just about chronology, it is about the places where these characters are in their lives. He has had his 'big' career, and she is still working on hers. Ultimately, if they do not separate, wiser, and with good memories of their ordeal, then we have gone from drama-adventure to fantasy. Even the most coincidentally-driven romance has characters who are ultimately more compatible in their lives. In-credible. |
