She's So Lovely (formerly Shes de Lovely) Step one, don't pay attention to the blurb on the nice shiny flyer. For anyone who's been in alcohol abusive or psychiatric institutional type situations, parts of this movie are going to be about as much fun as asbestos on a windy day. (And yes, it is as bad, if not worse then watching Noah Taylor being David Helfgott undergoing electric shock therapy in Shine). Seems like some of us have been desensitized to cut-throat situations by describing this film as a romantic fable full of funky barflys and colourful low-lifes centering upon a quirky love affair between an unconventional couple. Yeah right. |
Those who saw Robin Wright Penn in Forrest Gump should be ready for a change, to say the least. In She's so Lovely, Wright plays opposite to husband Sean Penn in the role of Maureen, a woman bound through passion to a man she loves and caged by her fear of losing him. The movie starts in the style of Charles Bukowskis Barfly. Theres the sleazy joint with plenty of booze to keep the punters happy. Theres the attraction of the live for the moment lifestyle with not too promising a future... until the excrement finally hits the rotating blades with Sean Penn's stunning performance as Eddie, a man who's love for his girl sends him over the edge in an episode of confusion and protective jealousy. The result of this explosive scene is its the very same love that leads him to be left shaken and tear-stricken within the confines of a mental institution. The second half of the movie occurs ten years later, with Eddie finally leaving the clinic to face the reality of what is left of his first life. John Travolta plays a card of a new husband to Robin Wright, who now has three daughters, the eldest of whom is her child with Eddie. And as I've heard many times before, what was first is now last, as the story bring Eddie and Maureen back through a full circle. Is there anyone else out there who's not too keen on John Travolting? Damn, shouldn't have said that now that Grease is back in full swing. |
