Star Trek IX: Insurrection Proud owner of several working titles, this is yet another script from the producers of the Star Trek series. In the Sixties, Star Trek was usually about something. The stories covered the obvious racism and political, and the relationships between the character. There were thought-provoking questions and humorous situations. And one of the amazing things was that this was a series about smart people. Well, maybe the red shirts were mundanes, but this was a series about scientists and archeologists and all sorts of specialists having adventures that challenged their minds and their values. | Patrick Stewart in Star Trek Insurrection |
Today, statistics and demographics rule. The Star Trek franchise is considered a sales device for targeting hormonally driven twenty-something men. The idea of challenging the audience, as well as the story-tellers is passe, and so is the story-telling. The stories are often so badly researched that it's like listening to schoolyard play-acting. There is a lack of thought about how the characters would reasonably act in a paramilitary organisation such as 'Starfleet'. In Resurrection the internal logic of behaviour and plot line is a greater fantasy than any twisting of science that a writer might make. In this film we are asked on one hand to believe that the captain of a flagship would ignore direct orders and that on the other his crew, who naturally take their lead from his behaviour, would unquestioningly follow his orders. Isn't it time we had a Star Trek adventure that is amusing, interesting, challenging and intelligent? Ali Kayn |
