Waking Ned Devine
Waking Ned Devine brings out the importance of friendship and
community within the Irish village of Tulleymore, where one of the 52
villagers has won a lottery worth several million pounds. Old friends
Jackie and Michael set out to discover who the mystery prize-winner is,
in the hope of befriending them and gaining a share of the jackpot.
Jackie arranges a chicken dinner, inviting all the regular lottery
players to his home, unfortunately, no one owns up to having won. But
it’s his wife Annie who discovers a leftover chicken leg and realises
that there was indeed one guest missing: Ned Devine.

Thinking that Ned
must have realised his plan, Jackie grabs the chicken dinner and rushes
out into the storm to Ned’s house. He finds him sitting by the telly,
still grinning with the winning ticket in hand and dead from the shock.
As Ned has no family to inherit the fortune (or so it seems), the money
will go unclaimed. And so Jackie forms a plan.
Literally in the ‘wake’ of Ned Devine’s win, the villagers band together to convince the lottery representative that Michael is actually the deceased Ned Devine. With the exception of the village witch: Lizzy Quin, a bitter old woman with a motor scooter and an attitude that would drive a fish out of water. Discovering that 10% of the winnings goes to anyone who uncovers a fraud, she had plans of her own. Pickled with Irish humour, a really delightful film to enjoy this Christmas. As director Kirk Jones said, “… It’s a little bit of magic, a little bit of hope.” Opens boxing day. |
