She's All That
He's the most popular boy in school, and he's just been dumped with consumate effectiveness and publicity by the most popular girl in school. So how does he maintain his supreme self-satisfaction? Simple. On a bet, he promises to create a new prom queen out of any girl his friends nominate.
They nominate the geek queen. Thus the stage is set for a 1990s Pygmalion.
It's been done before, with songs and haute couture and Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady). This time the leads are Freddie Prinze Jr and Rachel Anna Paquin.

It would Last Tested: 3-Jul-2014 be easy to write this off as a bit of teenage fluff, but there is a message here, wrapped up in some clever performances, and updated with skill. There are numerous clever moments and components in this film. Our heroine's uniform for her after-school job, for example. Freddie Prinze gets to practice performance art with a soft juggling ball, Rachael Cook dons a leotard and heavy makeup to indulge in creative dance, and most of the major characters have amusing quirks that give the actors something interesting to do, and us something interesting, and even thoughtful, to watch. She's All That is unlikely to be heading for any movie hall of fame, it doesn't break ground, although it has some clever techniques. However, it is a good story and offers hope for us all. And that is enough from a simple filmed story. Things to watch for: Sarah Michelle Gellar sitting in the school cafeteria. |
