October Sky
In 1957 the boys of Coalwood, West Virginia have two possible futures -- to get a football scholarship towards a college education, or to be a coal miner. Homer Hickman ( Jake Gyllenhaal) is too small to be a champion footballer, and he feels keenly the unfairness of scholarships for non-scholars.
Inspired by the sight of Sputnik in the October sky, Homer leads his friends in an effort to build their own model rocket. |
Their research and experiments make the boys the object of humour in their home town, but their teacher Miss Riley (Laura Dern) points them towards a science fair with a scholarship prize. Although we tend to make fun of the BOTS (Based on a True Story) sub-genre in Festivale, this story, based on the autobiography of now-retired NASA engineer Homer Hickman Jr is inspiring. It gives a wonderful look into a particular working-class population and the people who face the challenge of dreaming and becoming something different from their apparent birthrights. Hickman and his friends dreamed, worked, faced failure and success undertaking their project. |
