The Mummy
In 1719 B.C. in the Egyptian city of Thebes, a forbidden love between the evil high priest Imhotep and Anck-Su-Namun, the Pharoah's mistress, is exposed. Anck-Su-Namun takes her own life, leading Imhotep to defy the gods in Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead. For this he is sentences to be mummified undead for all eternity.
The Mummy is another of those rollicking archeological treasure-hunter adventure films, this one with some seriously horror-full special effects.
It's 1923, and Legionnaire Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Beni (Kevin J. O'Connor) accidentally find the lost ruins of Hamunaptra.

Movie Poster, The Mummy |
Rachel Weisz plays an eager English librarian in early 20th century Egypt. Years later, she uses her archeological skills to interpret an artifact stolen by her brother. After rescuing O'Connell from jail they travel with her ne'er-do-well brother (John Hannah) in search of missing treasure. Naturally they have rivals whom they must out-think and outrun. But their real nemesis is the evil Mummy who they are about to release. The Mummy is a fun, fast-moving film, the characters are engaging and enthusiastically played. As a writer I found the librarian as heroine completely plausible. The special effects are realistic and appropriately gruesome, and the attention to detail in the setting give create a wonderful environment for the adventure. Highly recommended entertainment.
