Vibes (1988) movie review
Paranormal Pursuits
Nick Deezy (Jeff Goldblum) can tell the story of an object by laying his hands upon it. A useful but sometimes embarrassing and frustrating skill in his job as a museum curator. Sylvia Pickel (Cyndi Lauper) is a would-be beauty school graduate whose spirit guide is her best friend.
They meet at a study on paranormal skills, and when Sylvia is offered a large sum to help find a lost son in the South American jungles, she enlists Nick's help. Together they travel to picturesque South America with Harry Buscafusco (Peter Falk) only to discover that they are in the middle of murder and mayhem and the search for immense wealth and supernatural power.
This is a wacky, 1980s romantic comedy with an unusual premise and three clever comedic actors. It finds humour in everything from unfaithful lovers to remorseless assassins to the tango.
Will Nick and Sylvia and Harry find the mysterious room of gold? What will is cost them to find it? Is there a happy ending in sight?
Fun, nicely paced, full of surprises and comedic moments.
