One evening while Betty is watching an episode her husband returns home with two men, who proceed to interrogate then immolate him. Glimpsing the murder in secret Betty goes into shock and decides the TV characters from A Reason to love are real and that the character Dr David Ravel (George McCord) is her fiance with whom she must reunite.

Movie Poster, Nurse Betty |
Fleeing the crime scene in a Buick Betty bluffs her way into a nursing job, and it all seems fine except her husband's assassins are after her and the drugs stashed in the Buick's boot. As each individual pursues their goal reality and fiction intermingle providing a humorous and poignant film about dreams coming true. The movie is well cast with Zelwegger's scrunched smiles showing vulnerability, mischievousness and insanity that Dr Ravel's perfect grin and eat me eyes can't understand. The good cop bad cop interpretation of a dangerous but essentially kind killer Charlie (Morgan Freeman) and his bad talking, fast shooting son Wesley (Chris Rock) is hysterical; particularly when Wesley notices his father has developed romantic feelings for the woman he's meant to kill. Winning the Best Screenplay award at Cannes (2001) director Neil LaBute's Nurse Betty is refreshing because it takes risks by mixing, mocking and inventing all sorts of genres, stereotypes and stories when you don't expect it to. |
