Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) movie review
New York City in 1939. A zeppelin docks with the Empire State Building (as they were designed to do. On the ship is a scientist under threat of death.
When Dr Jennings (Trevor Baxter) meets with ace reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) during a showing of The Wizard of Oz, he reveals a threat to leading scientists. As Polly makes her way back to the newspaper offices the city is attacked by giant robots and only the tactics and gadgets of Sky Captain (Jude Law), a.k.a. Joe Sullivan can save the day.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a classic adventure story in the tradition of serial thrillers and science fiction flicks of the early twentieth century. To add to the ambience, the film is fully computer processed to create the look and feel of a colourised graphic novel.
The characters are fun, from the gadget creator (Giovanni Ribisi) to that played by Angelina Jolie (no spoilers). The story is classic science fiction, the pace is good, and the characterisation sufficient to keep us interested.
An extraordinary vision from writer/director Kerry Conran there should be more of it.
