Across the Universe (2007) movie review
Soundtrack for an Era
Across the big pond, across the lines of class and education.
In the same genre as Mamma Mia, Across the Universe is a musical where the songs of a particular group are integrated into a story. In this case, the songs of The Beatles are worked into story of a couple who live and love in sixties New York.
She (Evan Rachel Wood), is an American girl who becomes involved in the important movements of the sixties, he (Jim Sturgess) is a Brit from a poor family who comes to the U.S. to find his father and stays to become an artist.
All you need is love.
Like many musicals, the breaks for the cast members to "burst into song" are somewhat distracting, and as the story winds up the film becomes increasingly disjointed. Possibly this is accurate, maybe it reflects the deterioration of people who lived too hard, but it causes the audience to leave bemused, not amused.
