Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) movie review
Chase Scenes with Aliens, Raccoons with Rocket Launchers
In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an htm coveted by the villainous Ronan. (source: IMDB)
Guardians of the Galaxy is doing big business in the United States. And why not? It's a heroes and villains movie filled with special effects, extra terrestrials in weird makeup, chase scenes and fight scenes, and fun music.
What it also is, is pandering. The humour is low-brow, and not really funny, the comments are smart-ass, not witty, and the film fails to do what the best of science fiction does - make you think.
Science fiction may have a reputation for being shallow and boys-own adventures, but at its best it has a sense of wonder, and a way of making us think about what it is to be human, and what effects come from changes in society or technology.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a thought-free zone.
So if you want a movie that they're taking kids to, because it doesn't challenge anyone, if you want bang, bang, shoot-em-ups, then race on in.
