In Bloom (2013) movie review
Growing Up in Georgia
Set in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi in 1992. Friends Eka and Natia look to leave childhood behind as they ignore societal customs and work to escape their turbulent family lives. (imdb)
This film has done well on the festival circuit winning the C.I.A.C.E. Jury Award. It is a (subtitled) coming-of-age film set in a relatively poor community. Although the two main characters are school girls, they are already of marriageable age in their society.
There is not so much teenage angst as a certain amount of depressed resignation. The people and the settings are either bleak or threatening. The teenaged rebellions are either as simple as smoking or as vicious as queue-jumping for bread and bride-by-capture.
Frankly, I had little sympathy for the characters. They appeared to be unwilling to try to make anything better, and passive acceptance is the next step to actively supporting a regime.
One feels that as long as the youth is dour nothing is going to change. Maybe that's the message here.
