Only Yesterday (1991) movie review
Past and Future
When 27-year-old office lady Taeko travels to the countryside for a working vacation, she takes her 10-year-old self with her.
Taeko is not unhappy in her life despite reminders that she is approaching, according to her family, her sell-by date. As we travel with her to the farm where she will work and stay, Taeko's 10-year-old self appears in flashbacks.
She remembers her past, and as she gets to know local farmer Toshio , tells him stories of pivotal moments.
This is not the manga of big-chested adventurers. This is a grown-up (no sex, no violence, no swearing) story of a simple Japanese life. It works well.
Made in 1991, Only Yesterday is a classic of the Anime form. It is sparingly drawn, but faithful to the details.
Don't bypass this film because you think anime is 'kids stuff'. If you want a film with three-dimensional characters, so to speak, something with heart, then this is for you.
