Book Club (2018) movie review
Life Just Keeps Getting Better (If You Let It)
A group of successful women 'of a certain age' (whatever that is), take turns in selecting a book to read and discuss. Outrageous self-make millionaire hotelier (Jane Fonda) distributes FIFTY SHADES OF GREY the best-seller that promotes S&M practices. The metaphor encourages each woman to step out of her comfort zone and demand more of her life.
Sharon (Bergen): If women our age were meant to have sex God wouldn't do what he does to our bodies.
Vivian (Fonda): Speak for yourself.
Sharon: Well, that was not God, that was Dr. Nazaria
Hooray for films that don't pretend that love stops a thirty, or forty. A Hollywood producer famously refused to consider romantic scripts from people over 35 because she thought they wouldn't remember what it was like.
Once a grande dame of film was Jessica Tandy in the back of a fancy car and this year's Lady Bracknell. These days we have Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenbergen and Candice Bergen, still talking and living life and love and sex and running their businesses (Mom, Hotelier, Chef and Federal Judge), and holding fast to honest female friendships.
"Love is ... just a word until someone gives it meaning."
What this film tells us is that 'over the hill' is more life.
What a great flick. It's a cleverly crafted intertwining of stories and lives and mixes laughter with pathos and ends, as it must, with the triumph of the human spirit -- and friendship.
Grab your double entendre glossaries and buckle up, it's gonna be a wet and wild ride.
