answers the Usual Questions
Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?
Actually, my fans have impacted my play more than my work. Whenever I'm at play, my fans tell me to get back to work writing. I try to oblige.
Is there any particular incident (a letter, a meeting, a comment that stands out?
One fan wanted me to send him (I believe it was a him) a picture of myself. As I'm incognito at the moment, there are no pictures of me available anywhere. Needless to say, I didn't break the trend that time (though I did take a shower afterward!)
Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?
I write across several genres, from fantasy to horror, science fiction to adventure, and I'm influenced by the greats in every genre.
In fact, it was probably a particular great that had a hand in inspiring at least part of that novel. J. R. R. Tolkien and George R. R. Martin, as well as Robert E. Howard, are massive influences of mine in my fantasy writings, and I adore them all more or less equally, with a slight tip going toward Howard, since we're both Texans. I'm also a big fan of H. P. Lovecraft and have several works of weird fiction that are very much inspired by the master (see City of Shadows and Nightmare City).
Who is the person you would most like to be trapped in a lift with? or a spaceship?
Well, there's two answers to that question. One is the person I'd like to be trapped with in the hopes that we could get untrapped. The Doctor (as in Who) could probably get us out of that particular jam, assuming he had the TARDIS with him, so he'd be pretty handy to have around in that situation.
The other answer is who I'd like to be stuck with on the assumption that I couldn't get out in a jiffy. Hmm. While we're on the subject of Doctor Who, a guy could do worse than to get stuck in an elevator with the Doctor's current companion, Clarissa.
Who is the person you would most DISlike to be trapped in a lift with? Or a spaceship?
Well, if Clarissa's in there with me, than if Clarissa ever gets a boyfriend, he would be pretty inconvenient to have around.
What would you pack for space? (Is there a food, beverage, book, teddy bear, etc that you couldn't do without?)
I never go anywhere without my book. If I could only choose one, I'd pick my Kindle, because I can fit a whole library on there. Oh, and some porn.
What is the most important thing you would like to get/achieve from your work?
I just want to be acknowledged as the best writer of all time, really. That's all.
What is the special satisfaction of your work?
Getting paid to do what I love.
