Kym Roberts
answers the Usual Questions
American author Kym Roberts followed her dream and became a detective that fulfilled her desire to be an investigative reporter, with one extra perk - a badge. Promoted to sergeant Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired from the job reluctantly when her husband drug her kicking and screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name, at least in her head.
Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?
I haven't gone to a convention yet since publishing Handled By Officer or Dead On Arrival. My first event will be after publishing Dead Man's Carve at Readers and 'Rita's in Dallas, Texas Nov 9-11, 2014. I'm really looking forward to it. In 2015 I will be attending RomCon in Denver, CO, RT in Dallas, Texas and Authors and Readers Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the meantime social media has been a blast, I've met so many new people, it's been a lot of fun;)
Is there any particular incident (a letter, a meeting, a comment that stands out?
One reader told me Walt Raynham from Handled By Officer was her new book boyfriend - loved that. Numerous readers have identified with the issues of domestic violence, getting the word out there that help is available is pretty near and dear to me. If I reach one person through my writing it's all worth it. But to reach victims on a broad scale, would be incredible.
Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?
I have several ;) But top of the list is Janet Evanovich. Love her! Jennifer Armentrout is quickly moving up on my list for her YA books.
Who is the person you would most like to be trapped in a lift with? or a spaceship?
I wouldn't pick my favorite actor or author, what if they turned out to be a jerk? It'd kill the dream. No, I'd pick my hubby cause as much as we'd bicker about our method of operation, we'd find a way out of the situation as a team...after we covered the camera(s) and enjoyed the alone time. :)
Who is the person you would most DISlike to be trapped in a lift with? Or a spaceship?
My twin. If I had a twin. God, she'd be difficult to get along with, always pushing and ordering me around. I'd have to set her straight-constantly.
What would you pack for space? (Is there a food, beverage, book, teddy bear, etc that you couldn't do without?)
My iPad. It's full of books, pictures of friends and family, and I can write new stories about space rangers:) And Shatto chocolate milk, dry spells without it are killers.
What is the most important thing you would like to get/achieve from your work?
To make someone laugh when they're going through a rough time. Janet Evanovich did that for me when my mom was terminally ill. I will always love her for that.
What is the special satisfaction of your work?
Creating another world that can allow a reader to escape the harshness of reality and give hope when it's needed most.
