Albury-Wodonga
Twin Towns astride the Murray
The Albury and Wodonga area is located on the Hume Highway three hours drive from Melbourne (5.5 hours from Sydney). A traditional gathering place for aboriginal peoples, the European settlements of Albury and Wodonga developed on either side of the river border between New South Wales and Victoria. They became an important hub, acting as a river port for the Murray traffic and a rail head -- the two states having different rail gauges.
Albury Railway Station completed in 1882 is one of the most imposing railway stations in Australia.
Famous for its annual Wine and Food Festival, this is a great area to sample local cheeses, smoked trout, mustards, wines and preserved. The more daring can try white water rafting, horseback rides, and gold panning. There are many walking tracks and cycle paths to encourage you to explore the region at a close range. While in the area, you can visit the grave of Jack Riley, the man from Snowy River.
