Ghost Rider (2007) movie review
Burning Without Heat
Johnny Blaze ... "he would be normal during the day, but at night, in the presence of evil, the rider takes over."
Another Marvel comic comes to the screen, and like so many before it, Ghost Rider is heavy on special effects and mock-mysticism and light on characterisation and acting.
Nicholas Cage plays a stunt rider who in his youth sold his soul to the devil in return for the remission of his father's cancer. Now an apparently unkillable stunt man he is called to the task of collecting souls for the devil.
But, shucks, folks, he don't wanna do it.
"You will be the rider for as long as you live."
His curse will become his power.
Whatever will he do? He will seek out a mentor, fight evil and hopefully win the girl. This is primitive stuff.
"Any man who sells his soul for love has the power to change the world."
The use of Sam Elliot as an old western-style grave digger is playing to type, he doesn't need to do much more than drawl his way through his lines. More amusing is Mephistopheles in a motor bike story being played by Peter Fonda.
Lack-lustre fire.
