Wild Wild West

Based on the television series, special government agent James West (WIll Smith) and Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline). It's Jules Verne in the American frontier west.

Artemus Gordon is a proper inventor and wearer of elaborate disguises. James West is a shoot-em-first-ask-questions-later lawman.

In this latest re-hash of sixties television the two characters meet and, under orders of the president of the U.S., are sent to find the evil genius of the south (Kenneth Brannagh).

They encounter a scanntily-clad female (Salma Hayek) and proceed against the remnants of the southern army with anachronistic inventions and rapidly flying bullets. It is sad to say of any film that Kevin Kline appear in that the Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek is the special effect, but this is true.

There's a rumour around that Ebert said that Smith and Kline acted together like Clinton and Starr at a celebrity golf tournament. That's only part of the disappointment. Yes, the two men played despite one another rather than 'off' one another, but the worst aspect of this film is absolutely the worst film editing I've ever seen. It wasn't so much cut as butchered.

All in all, a waste of money and talent.
