84 Charing Cross Road (1987) movie review
Celebrating the Written Word
Based on the biographical letter collection of the correspondence between New York writer Helen Hanff and the employees of a British booksellers, 84 Charing Cross is a heart-warming story about how strangers become friends over the years.
Anne Bancroft plays Hanff who lives inexpensively in a New York bedsitter and begins to buy her books from an Antiquarian bookseller in England. Across the years she shares little details of her New York life with the manager (Anthony Hopkins) and his staff, and she becomes a feature of their lives with her wit and thoughtful food parcels.
A solid cast including Judi Dench give depth to their understated performances creating a realistic world of simple folk. Enjoyable view into the lives of post-war Brits and Yanks.
