Val McDermid
answers the Usual Questions
Val McDermid has achieved, the journalist's dream. The journo with a novel in the bottom drawer (or lurking on the hard drive) is practically a cliche. She has achieved this, her crime fiction novels have include three successful series, all with strong, though flawed, female protagonists.
She answered our questions while visiting Melbourne. While in Melbourne, McDermid also addressed a meeting of Sisters in Crime.
Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?
Not directly. I love meeting the people whop read the books. I don't write with one eye on the reader.
Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?
A lot. Sara Paretsky, Reginald Hill, Ian Rankine, Frances Fyfield, James Lee Burke.
