28 Days

By a quirk of fate this was the third film in a row I saw about institutionalisation and drying-out. Whether this is synchronicity, Hollywood cloning, or the new American dream, watching someone dry out and (hopefully) dry up, is far from entertaining.

In the beginning, Sandra Bullock, as the drunk whose attempts at helpfulness bring upon disaster after disaster, enters rehab with the utmost cynicism.

While in some film s, she would be 'everyman' the average person, this is, one hopes, not an average situation. Her journey to redemption through group activities, bumper sticker wisdom and the kitschest of songs and chants is in itself a drug.

The Life of the Party... before she got a life.
The unsubtle message is: "If you don't wise up, you could be a character in this film."

Charmless and uninviting.
