Mr and Mrs Smith (2005) movie review

Time to Die, Darling

There are millions of couples experiencing the same problems.

John Smith (Brad Pitt) and Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) are your average bored-with-each-other corporate couple. Until the day when each received orders to kill the other.

When John met Jane in the middle of a Spanish-speaking revolutionary country it was hot and steamy and dangerous, and love. Five years later - no, six, they are living the bored, polite, under-therapy married life of a suburban professional couple. But, unknown to one another, at work they are each highly trained agents working for rival agencies, and the day comes when they are assigned the same target.

It's THE WAR OF THE ROSES all over again, but with guns and knives and explosives.

MR & MRS SMITH is a racy, pacy, witty, action-packed tale about finding love in adversity.

John: Do you think this story will have a happy ending?

Jane: Happy endings are for stories that haven't ended yet.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr & Mrs Smith, Festivale Film Review (c) Fox 2000

Everything about this film hits the mark. The look, the music, the special effects, the chemistry between the players, the Vince Vaughn comedy relief as his best friend, and the flawless timing in the dialogue delivery.

From beginning to end, MR & MRS SMITH delivers. It works as a romantic comedy in the best traditions, a meeting of equals, full of sizzle and quips, edgy and just a bit dangerous. And it works as an action film, with lots of stunts and explosions, near misses and shredding clothes. For fun, they both end up in their underwear, but not in a sexy way.

Go on. Go see it. You know you want to.

John: Come on baby, come to daddy.

Jane: (she hits, head butts, and kicks him into a wall) Who's your daddy now?
