answers the Usual Questions
Dee Leana (D. L.) Carter is an Australian-born author of paranormal romances and regency
Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?
Most of my interactions with fans is via Facebook - and Sci Fi conventions - and they fun to play with. Mostly I torment them by posting on facebook - oh, and today I tortured your favorite character from such and such a book - now working on sequel. Aren't you impatient to read it?
I don't deal with my own fans at conventions yet but I do appear on panels to talk about the complications of writing humor and small press issues and the people who attend ask me questions that send me hustling back to the computer to fix issues.
Is there any particular incident (a letter, a meeting, a comment that stands out?
I was on a panel on World Building with Julie Czerneda and when it came around to my turn to answer - what important thing do you think other writers miss? - I said "Smell." Julie and I then spent a while talking about the bad smells we have known that belong in a fantasy universe. People tend to forget where there are horses and pigs and goats there are baddddddd smells.
Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?
Terry Prachett - the great Sir Terry, king of fantasy humor and world building. Anything he has written.
Movies - that would be two with David Niven - Stairway to Heaven and The Brain.
Who is the person you would most like to be trapped in a lift with? or a spaceship?
In a spaceship - Jamie Hyneman - from the MythBusters. He could fix anything that could go wrong. And also my cat - The Evil Overlord - because he's a cat and will alert me to any alien invasions by eating them and spitting up their skeletons.
Who is the person you would most DISlike to be trapped in a lift with? Or a spaceship?
Adam Savage - also from the Mythbusters - unless you give me a taser.
I have to say there is another "type" of person I don't want to be in an elevator with - and that is "celebrities". I was at a sci fi convention in Brisbane, Australia and traveled in the lift with female guests from classic sci fi show. There were several attendees also in the lift but we were politely ignoring the stars so they didn't feel harassed. The lift stopped and a girl got in that we all recognized as being the talking head from a kids afternoon TV show. She waited for us to react - and we didn't, since we didn't want to be annoying. After a few floors the TV host turned to us and said, "You know, I'm famous." To which we replied, "We're infamous," and we all got out at the next floor.
What would you pack for space? (Is there a food, beverage, book, teddy bear, etc that you couldn't do without?)
Books - the complete Shakespeare including the poetry. The complete Agatha Christie.
What is the most important thing you would like to get/achieve from your work?
I get the imaginary people who live in my head out so that other people can find out what I am giggling about. I once had a co-worker ask me what it was like living inside my head and I said, "Noisy."
What is the special satisfaction of your work?
I have to say it is people telling me that the books are funny. Then they tell me their favorite lines and they are mine as well.
