The Discworld series
Humorous Fantasy that Never Falls Flat
It's a wonderful world of wit and whimsy. Terry Pratchett is one of the grand masters of fantasy, with his marvellous imagination and strange, humorous take on life.
In the tradition of some mythologies, the discworld is flat, mounted on multiple levels of creatures. In this case it's a flat disc, held up by four elephants, which stand upon the back of the great turtle Great A'Tuin.
Pratchett's work is often satirical. He draws upon a wide range of sources including myths and fairy tales, fantasy cliches, but also is inspired by, and sometimes parodies well known authors.
The discworld series is also influenced by the 'real' world: politics, social issues, science and technology. The greater discworld series can be divided into smaller series or story arcs that reflect this:
-Rincewind
-Death
-Witches
-City Watch
-Ancient Civilisations
-Industrial Revolution
Some of the titles are specifically for young adults, although there are some critics who place all the discworld stories in that genre. Better to say that all Pratchett's work is suitable for the young-at-heart.
