Dorothy L Sayers
Lord Peter Wimsey
The Noble Investigator: Lord Peter Wimsey
In early twentieth century London, Lord Peter Wimsey is one of the noble sons who returned from the first world war broken (shell-shocked).
A sensitive younger son, part French, Oxford-educated, he uses his intelligence background to investigate problems that catch his attention. He is ably assisted by his major domo, and former sergeant, the able Bunter. Bunter's skills include photography, fingerprints and discreetly questioning 'them downstairs'.
Lord Peter's title and empathy assist him, the former a definite entree in a stratified society.
The investigations (and Bunter's care) saved Lord Peter, but he pays a price, suffering terrible angst as those he brings to 'justice' are sentenced.
He discovers his beloved Harriet, a crime writer and ex-Oxford scholar herself, when she is brought to court for the murder of her (shock! horror!) former de facto husband.
The relationship between Harriet and Peter takes several tales to resolve. She is aware of the stigma of her past, as a 'fallen woman' and as a once-suspected murderer.
Many stories, especially those in contemporary television episodes and movies, throw men and women together without taking into account the basis for connections -- similarities of values, and to a lesser extent, interests. Harriet's decision to accept Peter is part of a novel that, told largely from her point of view, examines the issues of house-woman versus working woman, asking whether a woman can continue to be a productive member of the world if she takes on a family household.
Peter's succession of offhand, although heartfelt, proposals is a joy. For those of us without a serious education, Sayers' writing can be difficult as she includes material in French, German and Latin. The Latin especially is frustrating since the proposal and acceptance are in Latin, and the nuances of the question and answer are inaccessible. Similarly, Sayers' at least once puts the vital clue to an investigation in an untranslated passage.
Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series was recommended by Kerry Greenwood.

The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, Dorothy Sayers |
The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club 90-year-old General Fendman was definitely dead, but no one knew exactly when he had died -- and the time of death was the determining factor in a half-million-pound inheritance. Lord Peter Wimsey would need every bit of his amazing skills to unravel the mysteries of why the General's lapel was without a red poppy on Armistice Day, how the club's telephone was fixed without a repairman, and, most puzzling of all, why the great man's knee swung freely when the rest of him was stiff with rigor mortis.
